Enneagram Ego 9
"Over-Seeker"
This ego describes a person who feels incomplete and is therefore constantly looking for ways and opportunities in life to escape this profound negative feeling. This feeling is mainly characterised by thoughts of being unloved and left behind. This fixation therefore has a tendency to become strongly attached to certain compensation mechanisms and, among other things, to people in order to find a feeling of love and completeness in these. This is why this ego tends to attach itself either to certain spiritual or magical concepts or also to certain ideologies in order to find a purpose within them, or also to certain people or groups. What they lack most is a feeling of love in relation to the world, making them compulsive seekers for things that can enrich their life with purpose and fulfillment.
Furthermore, there are two different characters or realities within this ego: The Over-Seeker on the one hand and the Under-Seeker on the other. The Under-Seeker describes a sceptical and mistrustful person who is prone to fits of rage. This person tends to also be shrewdly calculating and extremely aggressive. She also has a very pessimistic and indolent attitude towards the world, which is justified by countless complaints which could develop into a rigid, pessimistic ideology. The Over-Seeker describes a gullible or naive person who is too quick to give away their own trust and is therefore prone to clinginess. Consequently, they are a natural supporter and follower; however, they can also take on fanatical personality traits and behaviours because of this. A single person can embody both characters in the course of their life, even at the same time. The following sections explain the totality of this ego fixation.
Ego-Characteristics
Ego-Fixation: Seeker
This fixation has the deepest lack of a sense of authentic being, as it projects having been abandoned by a mother figure. Their sense of abandonment, stemming from a lack of maternal care, develops into a profound lack of self-worth, mixed with feelings of being diminished, unwanted and worthless. This results in a strong scepticism towards others and the motivation to question everything. The feeling of not knowing exactly who they are and what their authentic form is accompanies them on a daily basis. The projection of being lost gives them the ability to change their own lifestyle without major problems, as they are constantly dissatisfied with situations anyway. This results in a search for a true form of existence and love, which they want to find either through people, spirituality or by following an ideology. From the feeling of being unappreciated and unvalued, they could also develop a strong will and take on authoritarian traits.
Their own mother figure was perceived as indifferent and disinterested, resulting in a projection of abandonment and lack of care and attention. This projection of abandonment develops into an intense lack of self-esteem. The reaction to this is the spiritual search for an ‘ultimate mother’ who receives them with loving arms and care; this can also be anything that symbolises such a mother figure.
Dichotomy: Domain of SpiritualityMoves between two extremes in the domain of spirituality. This domain includes everything otherworldly, magical, mystical or diabolical, also everything ideological. This is why hobbies and interests in this area are often pursued. Ignorance is the poison of this domain, as spiritual things are favoured over cold reality.
Ego-Delusion: IndolenceTheir delusion is that they relate to the world with a feeling of indolence or indifference because deep down they have a broken heart and find too little love in the world.
Ego-Projections:This ego wants to perceive itself as committed, kind, attentive to others and kind-hearted, mixed with a joyful and homorous attitude. The reality of this fixation is perceived by others as the projection of a person characterised by sceptical and distrusting behaviour, doubt, naivety and aloofness, with a tendency towards inertia and sensuality.
Ego-Position: Self-pityDue to trauma, this ego is in a constant state of self-pity, which is accompanied by ongoing complaints. The projection of this trauma is to be left behind, overlooked and unappreciated, which is why the ego might constantly feel sorry for itself and think that this is its fate, while it is constantly disappointed with the current state of reality.
Ego-Justification: PitySeek justification for their own perception of an unloving world by also feeling great compassion for the unjust situations and experiences of other people.
Ego-Balancer: Spiritual & realisticPerceives themselves as either very spiritual or very realistic, seeking a more positive or less painful approach to the world.
Ego-Reaction: DisillusionmentThe sudden reaction of the ego when situations in which they have found a kind of love are suddenly not as good as they had hoped, leading to disappointment and emptiness.
Ego-Insecurity: PrejudicesImbalance in the domain of spirituality leads to prejudices; mainly of a sexual or spiritual nature.
Passion: LazinessAs they feel left behind deep at their core, this manifests in the ego as an laziness in relation to themselves. The ego tends to stop caring about themselves and the world. In the meantime, however, they can do exhausting work for other people's projects.
This ego must discover the goodness of its own personality in order to acquire the will to create a path that leads away from its own indolent attitude to life.
Trapdoor: SeekerTheir own inner compulsion to curiously search for an otherworldly form of love within themselves and the world, along with the virtue of goodness, can open the trapdoor to a higher state of self.
Holy Idea: LoveFinding love and security in life is one of this ego's greatest ambitions. To achieve true love, this ego must stop feeling sorry for itself and open up to the infinite potential that lies hidden within both itself and the world.
Difficulty: IndecisivenessThroughout life, the ego is constantly plagued by its own indecisiveness.
Immoral Force: AlienationTends to have a difficulty communicating with others because of their sense of abandonment. This detachment gives them the outward appearance of not caring about other people, although this is not the case, as it burdens them.
Existential Attitude: Supporting - SarcasticIs supporting on the one hand, but sarcastic on the other.
Defense Mechanisms: Compensation, SymbolizationCompensation involves trying to compensate for or cover up needs, feelings of inadequacy or incompetence in one area of life by seeking fulfilment in another area of life in order to escape inferiority or unhappiness. For example, people may also try to compensate for perceived gaps by making friends who can distract them from the emptiness. Symbolisation is when a person turns to a certain behaviour or action to replace another. An example would be a child who looks for affection in parents but does not find it in them, which is why it turns another object, such as a stuffed animal or imaginary friends, into a symbol of affection.
Compensatory Mechanism: SensualityDue to an imbalance in the area of spirituality, they could indulge in sensual needs to compensate for their own feelings of sadness.
Possible Disorder: Avoidant/Dependant personality disorderIn isolated, extreme manifestations of this ego, it is possible for it to resemble avoidant or dependant personality disorder.
Way of self-realization: Self-awarenessThe path of the Seeker is to walk the path of self-awareness, where they must be in constant analysis with themselves. Through this analysis, a self-awareness can be achieved in which they recognise their own incredible worth, which can lead to self-love. This realisation is often accompanied by a path that has immense mystical nuances.
Domain of Spirituality
Representative Characters
Believer(Over-Seeker)This character is a gullible and trusting person who has a tendency to want to believe in themselves and others. Is a natural supporter and follower, always trying to justify their own beliefs in relation to what makes them feel loved. May take on fanatical personality traits or behaviours because of this.
Doubter(Under-Seeker)This character is a worldly or realistic, sceptical, suspicious person with a tendency to bouts of rage. They are also shrewdly calculating and have a rather pessimistic, indolent attitude towards the world. Tends to develop pessimistic ideologies that are characterised by prejudice.
Positive Domain
SpiritualityEmbraces a spiritual, mystical philosophy of life that gives the ego security and protection against a loveless reality.
RealismEmbraces a realistic lifestyle that seeks to take concrete steps to fulfil one's life with a sense of self-love.
Negative Domain
FanaticismThe ego insists too much on its own imaginary philosophy of life because it believes it can only find protection and love through it. It will not give it up under any circumstances.
SkepticismThe ego is too sceptical of the cold world and questions any concepts that deviate from its own distorted philosophy of life.
An imbalance in these areas can lead to ignorance and greed for love; in the worst case to the intense pursuit of sensual activities.
